What is potemkin island?

Potemkin Island, also known as the Battleship Island, is an abandoned island located in the Nagasaki Prefecture of Japan. The island was first developed in 1887 as a coal mining facility and gradually expanded. During World War II, the island's coal mining resources were utilized by the Japanese government to fuel its war machine. Post-war, the island became a ghost town as it was abandoned by its residents after coal mines ceased operations in 1974. The island is famous for its unique appearance as a sea fortress and has been a major attraction for tourists interested in urbex, architecture, and history. In 2015, UNESCO inscribed the island along with other related sites on the World Heritage List under the name "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining".
